Round 3
Palmyra Dragway, QLD

Round Three of the Rocket All Stars Racing Series was held at the picturesque Palmyra Dragway in northern Queensland. Situated on the outskirts of the city of Mackay, approximately a thousand kilometers north of Brisbane, Palmyra Dragway has been operating since 1968 and the 2009 Sunstate Nationals will go down as one of the very best events to feature on the track’s calendar. Held over two days, October 2 and 3 2009, the RDP Sunstates featured a 140-strong entry list with teams travelling from all over the country from as far as Western Australia as well as South Australia and Victoria.

In RARS Competition it was local hero Phil Otto who powered to victory over fellow Queenslander Greg Leahy in an all-altered final in which both drivers achieved identical reaction times. RARS Supercharged Outlaws was arguably the standout bracket at the Sunstate Nationals event with a huge field containing some of the best vehicles in the class. Last year’s champion, Christine Steffens won the event, which also means that Christine takes the maximum, 200 points with her into the Castrol EDGE Winternationals. The final promised so much but Steffens was forced into running a solo after the HQ Monaro of Garthe McIntyre refused to fire. McIntyre had until then performed faultlessly, desposing of Russell Mackay and Nathan Pierano enroute. The other Pierano, Zac, made the semis, where he fell to the dragster of Steffens.

Borg’s perfect 9.30 on a 9.30 dial-in made it difficult for finals combatant, Ashley Wanchap to overcome.
